bipcoinAs some of you know that are in the Freedom Feens community, and some outside of it, a new currency was launched a couple of weeks ago called Bipcoin.  It was the brainchild of Michael Dean, with Brian Gordon and Derrick Slopey working to help fulfill the dream.

For those of us in the Feens community (it’s not just good radio, it’s a community), we welcomed the creation of a coin that was, in a sense, ours.

We all had dreams of what this coin could mean, not just within the community but beyond it.  I was looking forward to building up enough BIPs to buy an ad on the Freedom Feens show.  I envisioned a network of Feen-friendly websites, podcasts accepting BIPs as payment for ads, links, promotions.  It might have even led to more BIP-payable potentials like folks in the community using BIPs to buy other things from one another, like web design, etc.

But sadly, it all came to an end today with an announcement that Bipcoin was no more.  Here is Michael Dean’s post on why;

Regarding BipCoin: SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING…..  Cheesy

BipCoin: we’re shutting it all down. After eight days of running this, we’ve determined we don’t have the manpower to make this work. It’s been a full time job for 3 people who already have full time jobs.

That may upset some people who’ve spent a little time mining, but I will say this to everyone: better now than a year than now. Better when there’s still not much invested than to limp along like a lot of cryptos for a year or two and fade out. We thank everyone who was supportive. Here are our final thoughts:

1. CryptoNote-type code is likely the future of AltCoins. But we’re not the ones to do it.

2. If you’re going to do this, fork Monero code, not CryptoNote code or Bytecoin code like we did.

Monero fixed all the bugs, and is the only CryptoNote coin with very active development. (Hang out in #bytecoin-dev IRC for a few days and see that the only people showing up are the occasional person needing tech support because Bytecoin’s wallet isn’t working well anymore. lol.) Plus Monero finally actually has some adoption now. Therefore, they are one of the few (or maybe only) altcoins (of about a thousand) to actually achieve some use in COMMERCE instead of just speculation.

3. We really were in this to try to do something helpful. If this were any kind of pump and dump (like many new coins), we wouldn’t be getting out now.

4. If you invested some time mining and are mad at us, we invested a lot more time, plus we spent a bunch of money on support services. We’ve lost money, not made money.

5. It’s been a fun ride. But we’re out. Go support Monero. They have the most chance of making his stuff widely accepted.

Thank you,

–The BipCoin team

Anyone who mined, I’ll send you a BipCoin sticker if you want (while supplies last). I’ve still got a pile of ’em. lol. Unless you were one of the people who was very demanding about tech help with this. But that’s always the case when releasing software. There are those who think they’re owed something.

The stickers cost me about 50 cents (US) each, plus postage to mail them out, so they’re actually far more valuable than a few hundred coin of most AltCoins. lol.

But if you think you’re owed ANYTHING, you didn’t read the last part of the BipCot NoGov license
http://bipcot.org/
that was on download links plus on the website and IN our software. (It’s the one part adopted from BSD 3-Clause license).

tl/dr: “The BipCot team owes you nothing. Life is about taking chances. You’re a big kid. Take responsibility for your life”:

I am definitely sad to see this experiment end, but I will not be joining or supporting anyone who thinks that the Bipcoin team owes them anything.  We who embrace true liberty embrace it in part because we are NOT afraid to fail, we are NOT afraid to walk to the edge of possibility without a safety net.

For my part, this whole experiment taught me a lot about digital currency.  And now I am ready to finally enter the Bitcoin universe.  The whole mining experiment for me (I got to 100 BIPs and I’m very happy about that) taught me a lot about the value of digital currency (just how and what was learned is a long article in and of itself).

So, for nothing but the time it took me to set up my wallet and the computer mining while I slept, I finally got that breakthrough understanding of digital currency that made it a lot less intimidating to me.

One of the reasons I love the Freedom Feens radio show is that it is more than a show.  It’s comprised of people that I’d want to know, I’d want to be friends with, I’d want to walk in Liberty with.  The show does more than put on a show, it experiments with LibPar here and now.

Be it the Bipcot No Gov License or Feen the Homeless, the crew lives liberty and experiments with how to live Liberty behind enemy lines, within the confines of these coercive enterprises called States.  This was one of those experiments.

Not all experiments work.  But we who pursue true liberty understand fully that we operate on the edge, without a safety net, boldly dreaming of a world yet to be seen in human history, a world where you rule yourself, where your associations are of your own choosing

If Michael came out next week with another digital currency to try, you can bet I’ll be there with my laptop mine, ready to dive in, come what may, into the edge where Liberty is lived out, not just theorized, where we accept life without safety nets, without guarantees.
